WhatsApp beta for Android is receiving a new update with version number 2.20.143. While this update doesn’t bring the much talked about multi-device support, the update does indicate that the feature is now further along in development stages, as noted by WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo. This feature will allow users to use the same WhatsApp account on multiple devices at the same time. You won’t be disconnected from the primary device when you log in from a different device. While the feature isn’t available to access just yet, it could be in the next few weeks once it’s confirmed to be bug-free.
In the WhatsApp Web screen, where it shows the devices you have logged into, beta users can now see the text “Use WhatsApp on other devices” right below the ‘Scan QR Code’ option. This is a clear indication that multi-device support for WhatsApp is on the way. Additionally, WhatsApp on Android’s main registration screen, WhatsApp will ask users to connect to a Wi-Fi network to save data, when you log in to another device. It also seems to throw a pop-up message that reads “Using mobile data may be slow and may use a large amount of your data plan.” WABetaInfo suggests that it is possible WhatsApp might require transferring data from the main device to secondary for that reason it could have added a ‘use Wi-Fi’ warning message.
Separately, WhatsApp rolled out eight-person group calling limit for both iOS and Android. The new extended limit was initially spotted in a WhatsApp beta update and was recently confirmed by its parent company, Facebook. Once the app is updated, users can start a group call with seven others from contacts. Given the current COVID-19 lockdown, under which group video calling is becoming a necessity, this new limit should definitely be useful.
